Products
Whether you are a conservative or aggressive investor, MGI Securities will work with you to select the products that are best suited to your needs, providing you with the flexibility to choose from Government of Canada Bonds, Mutual Funds or Hedge Funds, to name a few. The key is to understand the options available to you.
Equities
Equities or stock is an instrument that signifies an ownership position, or equity, in a corporation, and represents a claim on its proportionate share in the corporation's assets and profits. A person holding such an ownership in the company does not enjoy the highest claim on the company's earnings. Instead, an equity holder's claim is subordinated to creditor's claims, and the equity holder will only enjoy distributions from earnings after these higher priority claims are satisfied.
Fixed Income
Fixed Income security is a security that pays a specific interest rate, such as a bond, money market instrument or preferred stock. These debt instruments are issued with the purpose of raising capital by borrowing. The Federal government, provinces, cities, corporations, and many other types of institutions sell bonds. Generally, a bond is a promise to repay the principal along with interest (coupons) on a specified date (maturity).
Income Trusts
Income trusts are efficient business structures that encourage a large portion of a business’ revenues to flow directly to investors in the form of regular – often monthly – payments. A wide spectrum of Canadian industry sectors operate as income funds, including energy, real estate, technology, media and communications, food and beverage, and retail. Like an equity security, income trusts have the same accountability and transparency mechanisms as traditional corporate structures and are subject to regulation by both the TSX and Canadian securities regulators. While offering attractive yields through regular payments, income trusts are not fixed income securities – distributions and unit values may fluctuate based on market forces and business performance. More than 220 income funds are now listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange, representing a total market capitalization exceeding $165 billion.
